Darin L. Cash is one of the most active trombonists in the Austin area.  He currently works as a freelance trombonist and teacher in the Austin area, while also performing and teaching on euphonium and bass trumpet.  Darin serves as assistant principal trombone with the Austin Lyric Opera Orchestra, and is a founding member of Austinbones trombone quartet and the Austin Brass Ensemble.  He has been employed by The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor as a Brass Instructor, and has served as a teaching assistant at The University of Texas at Austin.

Having earned a Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance from the University of Texas at Austin (2002) and a Bachelor of Music in Education from the University of Texas at Arlington (2000), Darin is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Texas at Austin.  While at the University of Texas at Austin, he has held the position of teaching assistant for the trombone studio, and as an assistant for the International Trombone Association Press.

Darin is or has been involved with several performing ensembles both at the University and in the Austin community.  Some of these ensembles include the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Trombone Choir and UT Jazz Bones (Winners of the 2001 I.T.A. Kai Winding competition), Austin Symphony Orchestra, Austin Choral Arts Society, Mid-Texas Symphony and the Nash Hernandez Orchestra.

Darin has had the opportunity to study with some of the most prominent trombone teachers/players in the world, including Nathaniel Brickens, Darren McHenry, Andrew Russell, Charles Enloe, and has performed on masterclasses for trombone legends such as  Randall Hawes, Denis Wick, Heinz Fadle, and Jiggs Whigham.

Over the past few years, Darin has participated in some of the most prestigious trombone competitions in the world.  In 2001, he was awarded runner-up in the International Trombone Association’s Frank Smith solo competition.  In 2003, he was selected as a finalist in the Zellmer-Minnesota Orchestra trombone competition, where he was awarded third prize for performance of a solo and orchestral excerpts.

Darin has performed at such venues as the International Trombone Festivals in Boulder, CO., Nashville, TN and Denton, TX, the North Sea Jazz Festival-The Netherlands, the Worms Jazz Festival-Worms, Germany, the Brazilian Trombone Festival-Porto Alegre, Brazil and the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio.

A native of the small community of Iowa Park, Texas, Darin began playing trombone in sixth grade band.  After graduating from Iowa Park High School, Darin attended Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, where he had the opportunity to perform as soloist with the Cameron University Band and the 77th Army Band.  This led him to pursue a career in music by enrolling in the music program at The University of Texas at Arlington.  Darin excelled in this environment, and he became active in the UTA Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Trombone Choir and Jazz Combo I.  He received many awards and scholarships including the Arlington Arts League, Moseby scholarship for outstanding music student as chosen by the faculty, and the Lichtenwalter scholarship, which included a solo performance with the UTA Wind Ensemble.  Mr. Cash moved to Austin in 2000, and became immediately involved in the city’s thriving music scene.
